What is Reiki?
"rei"=universal    "ki"=life force                 Reiki is universal life force

Reiki, pronounced "ray key," is an ancient and gentle technique for healing by the laying-on of hands and so transmitting of this healing energy through the hands. Reiki is believed to have originated in Tibet thousands of years ago and current Reiki practice can be traced to the spiritual teachings of Mikao Usui in Japan during the 20th century. Reiki has an established track record of reducing stress, relieving pain, and supporting the healing process.Reiki works to replenish body energies, and helps restore mental clarity and focus. Reiki is based on the philosophy that there is a universal energy that supports the body's inherent self-healing abilities.

What is Animal Reiki?
I have learned through countless sessions with animals that remaining flexible is a key factor. Some animals will lay in my lap and take in a great deal of energy, while others may be at the opposite side of the kennel or pasture and feel more comfortable taking the energy from a distance.  The key factor that sets animal and human reiki apart is that the animal will set the stage and decide how and even if they desire to receive reiki. It really depends on the animal. Which is why reiki is so wonderful to offer to our animal companions. Abused and mis-treated animals can still receive great benefits, while  still honoring their comfort level, especially with humans they may be weary of at first. Whether long distance or in person the flow and energy of reiki is the same and offers the same benefits. The beauty in it to me is that I am merely the channel through which it flows...the energy knows exactly where it is needed most and goes there. Often a physical dis-ease is manifested due to a much deeper emotional pain or block. Reiki knows this and treats all the levels of it. I don't need to know(though the animals often tells me) what is being addressed in any given treatment. I just hold the space and allow and reiki does the rest. All this said, it is difficult to say what a "typical" session looks like because there really isn't a "typical" as it caters to the individual. What I can say is that it generally lasts about 1 hour. The animal will be very relaxed, may yarn a few times or sigh deeply. They may want to be right up close to me and move around to position the spot they want addressed into my hands. They may be across the pasture and I will just hold my hands on my lap. Either way they all get what they need. The specific hand positions used during  human reiki sessions, aren't employed in the same  way with animals. They will let me know through my body scan of them or through how they position their body, even through communicating ,where I should place my hands(or just my focus). However, the positions held cover all the major organs and chakra's in the animals body. Reiki works on all levels of the body, mind and spirit.

The goal of Animal Reiki:

The goal of Animal Reiki is to be a clear conduit for the flow of Reiki Energy through me to the animal. I do not need to know what's going on with the animal as the energy will go wherever it is needed. I am to serve as a clear channel without expectation or attachment to the outcome. I always ask for the highest and best outcome for the animal, it's human and the situation.

Animal Reiki and Animal Communication
It has been my experience that Reiki and Animal Communication, though  different, are interconnected and work in partnership. The animal always lets me know where to lay my hands and will often position and reposition their body to receive the Reiki flow in a specific area.  They will also communicate with me during the session and let me know through vision or knowing what is going on and even what  symptoms are being addressed and often why.

Training and licensing: Reiki is passed from Master to student. Authentication of a Reiki practitioner is based upon a lineage that can be traced back to Dr. Mikao Usui, the founder. A practitioner should have certification from a source that recognizes this lineage. Reiki practitioners can attain up to three levels of attunement. The term Reiki Master can only be applied to those that have achieved level three-the level that must be reached in order to teach Reiki to others. Animal Reiki is passed through attunements in the same way, from master to student, however there are some big differences in the process. It is important to have formal training specifically in the Animal Reiki field to best support you and to allow for the greatest benefit to the animals we serve.

What is Animal Communication?

The goal in animal communication is to serve as a bridge between animal and human. To serve as advocate for the animal and to support the human half of the relationship in understanding the different behaviors the animal is manifesting, to understand their healing or dying process, their crossing over and life on the other side, their messages of love and so much more. It is always about what the animal has to share, and how they chose to share the information, than anything else. My intent is to empower the human to make the best possible choice and decision as to the best way to support the soul of the animal and their particular life path once all the information has been provided to them.
The goal of Animal Communication: For me the information comes through many different "clairs". I am shown words, pictures, sometimes a "movie' plays out for me( the movie is how I am shown them on the other side or as they cross over) I feel things in my body, like pain or discomfort, I also feel their emotions. The experience from the other side(once an animal has crossed) is always from a much loftier perspective. From this vantage point they view things less from the day to day as we see things(i.e. their pain and suffering etc.) and more from a soul path perspective. When speaking to an animal still in form, it tends to be more about the day to day, like food, behaviors, relationships, likes and dislikes. So, the perspective changes depending upon where they are at, when the connection is made.  My many experiences working with  animals has provided me numerous chances to see the great unfolding of it all and to trust, unconditionally that whatever is desired, or hoped for from the human side is always received( whether it be closure, love, confirmation or understanding) I cannot take credit for any of this, one way or the other, and merely serve as the voice that brings the message through. I will say here that I am daily humbled and in complete awe of the entire process, start to finish.
The following are guidelines and codes as written by two of THE  pioneers in the field of Animal Communication(Penelope Smith) and Animal Reiki(Kathleen Praasad) and of which I follow in my own practice.
If you are still not clear about my role, a quick read of the following may give you a more complete picture.

Animal Reiki Code of Ethics
Developed by Kathleen Prasad, Founder of Animal Reiki Source

Guiding Principles:
  • I believe the animals are equal partners in the healing process.

  • I honor the animals as being not only my clients, but also my teachers in the journey of healing.

  • I understand that all animals have physical, mental, emotional and spiritual aspects, to which Reiki can bring profound healing responses.

  • I believe that bringing Reiki to the human/animal relationship is transformational to the human view of the animal kingdom.

  • I dedicate myself to the virtues of humility, integrity, compassion and gratitude in my Reiki practice.

In working on myself, I follow these practices:
  • I incorporate the Five Reiki Precepts into my daily life and Reiki practice.

  • I commit myself to a daily practice of self-healing and spiritual development so that I can be a clear and strong channel for healing energy.

  • I nurture a belief in the sacred nature of all beings, and in the value and depth of animalkind as our partners on this planet.

  • I listen to the wisdom of my heart, remembering that we are all One.

In working in the community, I hold the following goals:
  • I model the values of partnership, compassion, humility, gentleness and gratitude in my life and with the animals, teaching by example.

  • I work to create professional alliances and cooperative relationships with other Reiki practitioners/teachers, animal health-care providers and animal welfare organizations in my community.

  • I strive to educate my community in its understanding of the benefits of Reiki for animals.

  • I continually educate myself to maintain and enhance my professional competence so that I uphold the integrity of the profession.

  • I consider myself an ally to the veterinary and animal health community. I work to support their efforts in achieving animal wellness and balance. I honor other disciplines and their practitioners.

In working with the human companions of the animals, I will:
  • Share information before the treatment about my healing philosophy, the Reiki healing system and what to expect in a typical treatment, as well as possible outcomes, including the possibility of healing reactions.

  • Provide a clear policy ahead of time regarding fees, length of treatment and cancellation policy, as well as "postponement" policy, should the animal not want the treatment that day.

  • Never diagnose. I will always refer clients to a licensed veterinarian when appropriate.

  • Honor the privacy of the animals and their human companions.

  • Share intuition received during Reiki treatments, with compassion and humility, for the purpose of supporting their understanding of the healing process.

  • Respect the human companion's right to choose the animal's healing journey, selecting the methods, both holistic and/or conventional that he or she deems most appropriate, with the support and advice of a trusted veterinarian.

In working with the animals, I follow these guidelines:
  • I work in partnership with the animal.

  • I always ask permission of the animal before beginning, and respect his or her decision to accept or refuse any treatment. I listen intuitively and observe the animal's body language in determining the response.

  • I allow each animal to choose how to receive his or her treatment; thus each treatment could be a combination of hands-on, short distance and/or distant healing, depending on the animal's preference.

  • I let go of my expectations about how the treatment should progress and/or how the animal should behave during the treatment, and simply trust Reiki.

  • I accept the results of the treatment without judgment and with gratitude toward Reiki and the animal's openness and participation in the process.

CODE OF ETHICS for INTERSPECIES COMMUNICATORS Formulated in 1990 by Penelope Smith

Our motivation is compassion for all beings and a desire to help all species understand each other better, particularly to help restore the lost human ability to freely and directly communicate with other species.

We honor those that come to us for help, not judging, condemning, or invalidating them for their mistakes or misunderstanding but honoring their desire for change and harmony.

We know that to keep this work as pure and harmonious as possible requires that we continually grow spiritually. We realize that telepathic communication can be clouded or overlaid by our own unfulfilled emotions, critical judgments, or lack of love for self and others. We walk in humility, willing to recognize and clear up our own errors in understanding others’ communication (human and non-human alike).

We cultivate knowledge and understanding of the dynamics of human, non-human, and interspecies behavior and relationships, to increase the good results of our work. We get whatever education and/or personal help we need to do our work effectively, with compassion, respect, joy, and harmony.

We seek to draw out the best in everyone and increase understanding toward mutual resolution of problems. We go only where we are asked to help, so that others are receptive and we truly can help. We respect the feelings and ideas of others and work for interspecies understanding, not pitting one side against another but walking with compassion for all. We acknowledge the things that we cannot change and continue where our work can be most effective.

We respect the privacy of people and animal companions we work with, and honor their desire for confidentiality.

While doing our best to help, we allow others their own dignity and help them to help their animal companions. We cultivate understanding and ability in others, rather than dependence on our ability. We offer people ways to be involved in understanding and growth with their fellow beings of other species.

We acknowledge our limitations, seeking help from other professionals as needed. It is not our job to name and treat diseases, and we refer people to veterinarians for diagnosis of physical illness. We may relay animals’ ideas, feelings, pains, symptoms, as they describe them or as we feel or perceive them, and this may be helpful to veterinary health professionals. We may also assist through handling of stresses, counseling, and other gentle healing methods. We let clients decide for themselves how to work with healing their animal companions’ distress, disease, or injury, given all the information available.

The goal of any consultation, lecture, workshop, or interspecies experience is more communication, balance, compassion, understanding, and communion among all beings. We follow our heart, honoring the spirit and life of all beings as One.
